Statement from the Museum Trustees

A planning application has been submitted by Imperial Homes Southern Counties relating to the proposed building of 12 new homes on land inside the entrance of The Brickworks Museum. The land, which is situated on the left as visitors enter through the Museum gates, is currently underused and (in parts) overgrown.

The Trustees of the Museum are pleased to support this development which is an enabling development – one where the funding generated by the development is used to fund the restoration or preservation of a heritage asset or infrastructure project. In this instance, the funds raised will be used to restore two drying sheds of the Grade II* listed former brick factory that houses the Museum.

Sheds 1 and 2 are currently unroofed, open to the elements and are currently in such a poor state they are on the Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register. The Trustees and Staff of The Brickworks Museum see it as our responsibility as custodians of a unique heritage asset to restore and preserve these historic buildings, with the eventual aim of turning them into usable spaces that in turn generate revenue towards the future preservation of the site. Imperial Homes’ purchase of the land to be developed is the first step towards funding this work.

The homes will be accessed via the current Museum entrance and there will be minimal change to the existing frontage and gates of the Museum on Swanwick Lane. The planning application details surveys undertaken in respect of archaeology and ecology, and the site as a whole has an ecological plan that will be considered at every stage of the process.

We are indebted to our local community who have supported us as visitors and volunteers since we opened as an independent industrial Museum in 2014, and we hope that they will continue to support us as we strive to ensure the long-term viability of our unique site.
