In February 2022 Southampton Young Archaeologists’ Club took over the Brickworks Museum! This was part of our National Lottery Heritage Funded project – Bombs, Bricks and Belles – which aimed to find out about life at the site during the Great War, to find out about the Brickworks’ role as a munition filling depot and to find out about the enigmatic Brickworks Belles – the women who worked here during the war.

Our intrepid young volunteers were given four topics to bring to life online in any format or fashion they chose – these were Bricks, Bombs, Belles and Families.

Some groups chose to make posters, others to act out short stories, one led us on an engaging and informative 20 minute tour of the site (#YouWillDie) and our Belles group told their story through the medium of TikTok!

We are incredibly proud of how well the children – who range in age from 8 to 16 – approached the topic, understood the assignment and applied themselves to bringing history to life at the Brickworks.

Watch what they got up to and enjoy their unique and funny take on 125 years of Brickworks history on our YouTube channel.

With thanks to players of the National Lottery – your ticket purchase funds a wealth of good causes.
