‘It was run by women all the lot!’ is how one brickworker described the site when he returned from WW1. But who were the women of the ‘works’, and why were they here?

Over the last two years our volunteers have been finding out, thanks to the generous support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund. In this special FREE event day, join us as we bring WW1 and what our volunteers have found out to life.

Find out about life in 1918 from our costumed interpreters who will be ready to tell you the stories of the women of the ‘works, and about life during the war more generally. There will be hands on activities, displays and a brand-new exhibition. This one-off event includes fun for all the family including military inspired fashion from the Museum of Army Flying, a historic bus in the yard and the narrow gauge railway will be running rides for a small additional cost. There will be a display about the First World War and our original 1897 steam engine will be in full steam.
